(CNS Local Life): RBC Royal Bank continued its 19-year partnership with the Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC) during their recent fundraising golf tournament. This year’s event featured the Canadian Olympian Jamie Broder and raised more than $50,000 for the charity. More than 100 participants from organisations across Cayman gathered to play while raising funds for CIRC.

Hailing from Victoria, British Columbia, Broder is one of Canada’s top beach volleyball players. Growing up, she was a multi-sport athlete before she decided to focus on indoor volleyball while completing her bachelor of commerce degree at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where she captained the team to their first Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championship in more than 30 years.

“RBC is pleased to continue its commitment as a title partner of this annual tournament. Our strong partnership with CIRC over the years, demonstrates our dedication to the development of the Cayman community,” said Omari Corbin, RBC country manager and area vice president, personal banking, in a press release.

“We encourage participation as each year this event offers fun for all, while raising money toward a worthy cause. We are also grateful for all the volunteers who ensured that all aspects of the tournament ran efficiently.”

The bank is one of the largest fundraisers for the CIRC, and the money raised at the event directly benefits the four main programme areas of the Red Cross:  disaster management, first aid and CPR training, child protection education, and volunteer development. Each of these components is critical to the nation’s safety.

Director of the Cayman Islands Red Cross Jondo Obi said, “For 55 years, the Red Cross has supported families and individuals in the Cayman Islands. The funds raised at this event are instrumental for us to continue offering aid to those who desperately need it. We are extremely grateful for the continued support of RBC Royal Bank, as well as all our sponsors and volunteers.”

Obi added, “One hundred percent of the money raised through this tournament stays in the Cayman Islands and goes directly toward supporting the incredible work of the Red Cross. We encourage all businesses and community members to consider participating in the event next year.”

Broder and her partner Kristina Valjas recently competed at the Rio Olympics for Canada in beach volleyball, a lifelong dream of the athlete. During her weekend in Cayman, she participated in a volleyball clinic for young people, as well as an “Olympic Challenge” where golfers and volleyball athletes competed against each other.

Other sponsors for the 2016 event were the North Sound Golf Club, Foster’s Food Fair, Mise en Place, GT Automotive, Car City, Trac, Breeze FM, Radio Cayman and Quick Images.
