Summer interns with CIMA staff

(CNS): A group of young Caymanians have spent the summer as interns at the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) under an initiative aiming to provide career-development opportunities to students looking to gain work experience. The authority has also awarded scholarships to two students seeking to further their education in the finance and business fields.

The 11 interns were Janielle Scarlett, Dushun Wilson, Tamiyah Ebanks, Adrian Mackey, Andrew Thomas, Janelle Woods, Elythia Ebanks, Cline Glidden III, Keziah Ebanks, Mickeal Thomas and Candace Charles. The students, some of whom participated in last summer’s programme, were placed in various divisions within CIMA. Over the last three years, CIMA has permanently hired five students on completion of their studies.

CIMA also named Ashleigh Powell and Kessean Mitto as recipients of its Thomas Jefferson Memorial Scholarship for 2016. Powell is pursuing a bachelor of business administration degree in cyber security at the University of Texas at San Antonio. “The dual purpose of my degree will give me the expertise to play a role in the world of business along with information technology as the two continue to combine,” she said, thanking CIMA.

Mitto is obtaining his bachelor’s degree in economics and actuarial science at Illinois State University. He said he plans to use his degree “to facilitate the assessment and management of risk for financial investments, insurance and reinsurance policies, and any other projects involving a measure of uncertainty”.

Patrick Bodden, CIMA acting managing director, said, “At CIMA, we are firm believers in providing positive and real work experiences for our young people through our career-development and scholarship programmes. We aim to make these opportunities stepping stones to a future career with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.”

CIMA established the scholarship programme in 2007 in memory of the late Thomas Jefferson, former financial secretary and leader of government business. It is awarded to students pursuing higher levels of education such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a broad range of subjects in the business field.
