(CNS Local Life): A community effort in Cayman resulted in 10 tonnes of relief supplies being delivered to hurricane-ravaged Haiti on Sunday, 16 October, with more goods on the way. The initial shipment, flown in by Cayman Airways, was handed over to Operation Blessing, a non-profit humanitarian organisation which is coordinating distribution on the ground to help the country that has been devastated by Hurricane Matthew.

The next day, DHL donated cargo space to ship 90 boxes of medical relief supplies to assist an orphanage in Haiti, Matthew Leslie, who has led collection efforts in Cayman, explained in a Facebook posting. More than 3000 people have donated over $500,000 worth of supplies.

The next step will be organising a shipment of containers, also directed to Operation Blessing. Leslie is hoping to get more help in dealing with the donated goods. “We will need additional volunteers to assist in getting the supplies not yet on pallets loaded and ready for the containers,” he posted on Facebook. “We also will be sending supplies to Cuba as well and will announce drop-off times to those who are specifically wanting items sent there to assist.”

In addition to transporting the supplies, Leslie explained that on the flight Sunday were Haitian children and adults returning to their country after the youngsters had received free heart surgery at Health City Cayman Islands.
