Wants to trace family’s roots

| 31/10/2016

I’ve often wondered if there is an archive or form of records located somewhere in Grand Cayman that has kept track of early European settlers to the Cayman Islands where younger generations would be able to trace their ancestry? From there, hopefully finding other records of family in England or Scotland etc.

Auntie’s answer: What an interesting question. I hope my answer inspires other people to learn more about their genealogy.

A very helpful person at the Cayman Islands National Archive (CINA) supplied lots of information that should aid you in your search. For starters, here is a brochure on CINA along with one on “Genealogy Records: An Aid to Locating Your Ancestors”.

The representative explained that the latter brochure provides a description of the genealogy archives in CINA’s historical collections. In addition, it was suggested that this “GIS: Spotlight” segment on CINA and tracing your ancestry would be helpful:

Visitors interested in conducting genealogy research are welcome to stop by. The reading room is open weekdays from 9am-4pm, though it is recommended that you book an appointment to guarantee time and space, the official said, adding, “The CINA team will always be on hand to provide assistance as needed.”

CINA is located on Archive Lane (of course), off Printer Way, which is off Shedden Road.

I hope you have success tracing your roots. If nothing else, spending a few hours at the archive sounds like a fascinating and enlightening exercise.
