Barbados Independence Day celebrations

(CNS Local Life): Barbadians and friends are preparing for a weekend of independence activities in an early celebration of Barbados 50th anniversary which falls on 30 November. The festivities begin Friday, 11 November with a celebration of culture, nationhood, food, fellowship and music, when Barbadian Calypsonian RPB will perform at a banquet. He is expected to sing some of his more popular songs as well as classics that tell of the country’s social and political history and growth.

Guests at the party will be treated to a sneak preview of the docudrama depicting the life of freedom fighter Errol W. Barrow, who led Barbados to independence and became its first prime minister. Former US attorney general, Eric Holder, who is of Barbadian parentage, is one of the narrators of the film, which was produced in Barbados.

On Sunday, 13 November, there will be a service at 4pm at St George’s Anglican Church, with visiting Rev. Hugh Sandiford from the St Matthias church in Barbados. Immediately following the service will be “A Taste of Barbados” with Bajan food and drink, and a cultural display.

Juliette Gooding-Michelin, honorary consul to Barbados, said that not only are Barbadians celebrating but they are also using the opportunity to raise funds to assist with special projects at the East End Sunrise Cottage residential home for the elderly. She explained that each year the Barbadian community works on contributing to a selected project, adding, “We are all getting on in age and we never know when we may need a helping hand in our old age.”
