The “Love Boat” at the Little Cayman parade

(CNS Local Life): The annual Pirates Week festival kicked off Saturday, 5 November with a celebration on Little Cayman attended by about 100 people. Among the revellers were Cayman’s own pirates: Darvin “Captain Black Terrence” Ebanks of the Bloody Bay Buccaneers and Orneil “Captain Gunpowder Wes” Galbraith of the Las Tortugas Pirates, along with tourists and residents.

The group took to the road to showcase their float designs in the annual Little Cayman parade. The flotilla began at Head o’ Bay (near Southern Cross Club) and journeyed west to the Hungry Iguana Restaurant where pirates, patrons and residents enjoyed a costume competition, a pirate dance, food and drinks.

The evening was capped off with a fireworks display.

Frank Roulstone, general manager of one of the festival’s sponsors, Cayman Distributors Group, said, “This is truly a community event. Pirates Week is inclusive of all three islands and Little Cayman is one of the greatest parties of all.”

The following day there was a farewell barbeque at the McCoy’s Lodge.

“This is only the beginning of what is shaping up to be a fantastic festival,” said Melanie McField, Pirates Week executive director. “We want to thank all our sponsors and participants for travelling over to Little Cayman to help enhance the celebration for all the visitors here.

“We also want to give a special thanks to Kerry Scott, our Little Cayman planning committee chairperson; without her hands-on approach, none of this could have been possible.”
