Unseeded Jakub Neveril took the under 14 division

(CNS Local Life): The Cayman Islands Tennis Club hosted the PwC Junior Circuit tournament over the weekend, marking the first event for the 2017 season. The competition attracted 22 juniors all together and included some new entrants to the under 10 division. Two of the three finals required a third set to decide who would win the first leg of the series.

Many of the tennis juniors who participate in these tournaments play internationally to be able to compete at a high level throughout the year, said a tennis club press release, which added it is therefore always entertaining to see the young people take part in Cayman tournaments.

Jake Fagan and Phin Ellison faced off in the under 10 final, which proved a back-and-forth affair. Fagan took the match in a tough three-setter, 6-3, 6-7, 10-7, with both players showing a lot of pride and determination.

Rafael Wejbora defeated Digby Robinson for third place in the division, while two newcomers battled in the consolation match, with Charlie Jones besting Jamie Price in three sets.

In the 14 and under division, unseeded Jakub Neveril upset top seed Willow Wilkinson in a difficult three-set semifinal, and continued his success with a win in the finals against Alex Priestly, 6-3, 6-3.

Wilkinson went on to take third place over Gavin Sunely while Sebastian Bjuro defeated Barnaby Robinson in the consolation final.

In the 18 and under division, the best under 18 female player took on some tough competition, with top seed Jade Wilkinson playing the number two seed, Jack Lomax, in the finals. This match also went back in forth for three sets, with Jade Wilkinson capturing the first title of the year with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory. Lauren Fullerton, another promising Cayman junior, defeated Nealdeep Ghosh for third place while Jake Serpell ended up with the consolation trophy.

Tournament director Rob Seward said he was pleased to see the kids back on the court in the new year. He noted the success of some of the younger juniors who had moved up an age division from last year.

The second leg of the PwC Junior Circuit will be played in the middle of February at the Cayman Islands Tennis Club.
