Who can access police reports?

| 02/02/2017

If an individual were to make a report to the police or through a 911 operator, would it be possible for an individual who works in the Office of the Complaints Commissioner (OCC) to access and read/download/amend the report in any way?

Auntie’s answer: When making a police report, it is certainly understandable many people would prefer to remain anonymous; the RCIPS offers various ways to contact them without using a name (you can call the Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477 (TIPS)).

But as to the question you posed, from what I have learned, that scenario cannot occur.

From the perspective of the OCC, a representative assured me that the office does not have access to the RCIPS database and would not be able to view or change a record.

I also approached the Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC), which is responsible for the 911 call centre. According to the department, “A report made to 911 can only be accessed by individuals who have been granted access by 911.”

More specifically, “Members of the RCIPS are the only persons granted read/write/edit access to reports made to 911 outside of the employees of 911.”

My understanding is that Customs and Immigration have access to police reports but he person is asking about the OCC and not the Immigration Department.
