Kids ages 7 and 8 at Gaelic football team training

(CNS Local Life): Young Gaelic football enthusiasts showed up in force for the first training session of the year, on Saturday, 11 February at the Cayman International School pitch. The “Start of Season Blitz” event for the Kids Gaelic Football Club attracted 65 children who learned about the sport from 15 coaches.

The training started with warm-up, movement and agility drills such as “Gaelic Bulldog” to get the session going, followed by skills-based games. Then the children were then divided into age groups of 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11 plus, to start work on their team skills. The day finished with a mini blitz competition within the four groups.

The children came from several schools on island, and they were able to use skills they had learned in other sports such as netball, soccer and rugby while picking up new Gaelic techniques.

The coaches were also very enthusiastic and excited at the talent that was displayed by some of the children who had never even seen the sport before or had never played a team sport, stated a press release from the club. Many parents also participated in the session and were enquiring about more regular fixtures.

The next event will be the St Patrick’s Day Blitz set for 18-19 March.
