(CNS Local Life): The Truman Bodden Law School (TBLS) is set to introduce a master of laws (LLM) degree in international finance law and regulation in September 2017. The programme will cover topics including international finance, banking regulation, international insolvency, choice of law and public-private partnerships. Directed initially at Cayman Islands nationals and residents, the degree will first be offered as a part-time course and taught over two years, with a one-year full-time option expected by 2019.

The course is set to win approval from the University of Liverpool in the UK, a member of the elite Russell Group for excellence in education, stated a TBLS press release. This will mean that graduates of the programme will receive the LLM award from the university with all the professional benefits and opportunities associated with the degee. Liverpool University already works in close partnership with the law school in providing its long-established LLB (Hons) degree.

Law school director Mitchell Davies said of the new programme: “Launching the LLM degree in a specialism which reflects the longstanding reputation of the Cayman Islands as a leading offshore financial centre heralds an exciting new era for the law school which will complement our established bachelor of laws and professional practice course offerings.

“The new postgraduate programme marks a further chapter in the evolution of the Truman Bodden Law School as a regional leader in the provision of legal education.”

Laura Panades, who will be the course leader, said, “I am delighted with the quality and quantity of enquiries I have received about the new programme. There is both a local need and a desire for postgraduate education in the field of international finance.

“Students will benefit from this further training in professional skills and specialist knowledge, which will equip Caymanians with the tools they need to compete globally.”
