Government workers participate in a previous Meals on Wheels dress down day

(CNS Local Life): Cayman Islands Meals on Wheels (MOW), which is celebrating 20 years of serving the community’s most vulnerable, the seniors and the infirm, has scheduled several fundraising events for this year, including a gala and dress down day. In 1997, the organisation began by feeding 14 seniors in George Town and over the years this service has grown to bringing food to 215 people across Grand Cayman, adding the districts of East End and Bodden Town, and, as of 2016, North Side.

West Bay is the only district in Grand Cayman without a kitchen, and the non-profit hopes to add that area this year, according to a MOW press release, which stated that a building has been identified and funds have been pledged for the development of the property to make it suitable for a kitchen and senior centre.

In addition to government funding, MOW depends on support from corporations and individuals.

On 3 March, designated the “March for Meals: Cayman Icon Day”, corporate volunteers are being asked to deliver meals to seniors. That same month, MOW is holding a “Coin Collection Day” on the 24 and 25 March at which volunteers are needed to stand outside local supermarkets and other stores for two hours either day to collect donations.

The following month MOW is holding its fourth annual “Orange You Glad” gala on 8 April. In addition to volunteers, the organisation seeks sponsors for the event as well as donations for the live or silent auction.

On Friday, 29 September MOW is holding a dress down day, with people encouraged to wear orange in support of the charity’s fight to end senior hunger. “Senior Rock” T-shirts, ribbons and wristbands will be on sale for supporters to wear that day.

Finally, Saturday, 25 November is set for MOW’s second annual “Turkey Trot”, a 5K fun run/walk.

In addition to participating in these activities, people can “adopt” a senior and pledge to feed him/her for a week, month, six months or a year.
