Youngsters try out go karts at the last Brac Spring Weekend in 2015

(CNS Local Life): Cayman Brac teenagers and young adults are set for a weekend of forums, drone racing, and sports from 10-12 March 2017. The Youth Services Unit (YSU) of the Ministry of Community Affairs, Youth and Sports is organising the activity-filled days of free events. James Myles, YSU acting head, said of the event, “The Brac Spring Weekend is to empower young people in the Brac to participate and advocate for their community.

“Its main goals are to encourage attendance to its two youth forums: One for high school students and the other a breakfast forum for 17 to 25 year olds to gather and dialogue.

“We’re very excited by the feedback we’ve been getting about all the events we’ve planned and expect a strong turnout.”

The weekend will kick off with the Brac Youth Forum set for 2pm-4pm, Friday, 10 March, at the Layman E. Scott High School. Hosted jointly by the Cayman Islands Youth Assembly, the interactive session will encourage teenagers to discuss topics of interest as they relate to them and the community.

A three-on-three basketball tournament will be held that evening from 7:30pm-9:30pm, at the high school’s basketball courts. Teams will get the chance to show off their skills, with the winners earning prizes and a year’s bragging rights.

On Saturday, young people are invited to watch a drone-racing exhibition on the playfield. Flown by trained individuals, the racing will start at noon. Later that day, organisers have planned a scavenger hunt. Starting at the Bluff Playfield at 1pm, the all-island hunt, hosted with help of the Cayman Islands Scouts, will test participants’ tracking and clue-interpreting skills.

The kickball competition, which is open to all ages and skill levels, will take place at the Bluff Playfield at 4pm. Entertainment will be provided by the Koalition Dance Group. Following the competition, Cayman Brac FC will play Academy FC in an U13 match.

To round off the day, a half-line kick-off competition will take place during halftime of the Cayman Islands Football Association’s Division 1 match between Cayman Brac and North Side.

Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be on sale at some of the events with the proceeds going towards helping the local community.

The weekend closes out Sunday, 12 March, with a young adult breakfast forum at the Cayman Brac Beach Resort, from 8:30am-10:30am. Free for participants aged 17 to 25 years old, the breakfast discussion will encourage attendees’ to speak about topics of mutual interest.
