(CNS Local Life): The Garden Club of Grand Cayman is looking for a record number of entries to its annual flower show as well as attracting young people to take part in the design competition. The combined 53rd Standard Flower Show and 60th anniversary celebration is set for 31 March-1 April at South Sound Community Centre.

Club president Ora Hollebon said she is delighted with the efforts from her team, stated a Garden Club press release. “I hope this will be one of our greatest flower shows yet. We want to celebrate the natural beauty of our sun-drenched islands and what it has to offer,” she said.

“We want our wonderful community to be inspired and excited by our show and we encourage new members and supporters to join.”

The show will also feature a plant sale of a wide variety of native trees, shrubs and flowers.

The competitive categories comprise table designs (functional and exhibition), miniature and small designs, cut horticultural specimens, artistic designs, educational and youth exhibits.

Many of the designs can be created with everyday objects along with the flowers. Pieces of driftwood, and other items found on the beaches, can be used to provide backdrops and additions to a floral arrangement.

Miniature garden created by Vigoro Nursery

Caroline Johnston, publicity chair for the flower show, said she is hoping that the event will inspire children. With the support of Vigoro Nursery, the youth exhibits are open to anyone 18 and under, and entries will be split further into age groups. Under the theme of miniature gardens, the young people can incorporate native plants and accessories to enhance their creations.

“Vigoro has allowed us to use images of their own miniature gardens as examples for the children. They have also offered discounts on the miniature accessories, which are available in their stores, in the run-up to the competition. From tiny pagodas, to deckchairs and sun loungers, children can encapsulate their own creativity and nurture their designs for months to come.”

The pre-registration deadline for all entries is Friday, 10 March. The show runs 1pm to 6pm on Friday, 31 March and 9am to 4pm on Saturday, 1 April.
