Participants and families at last year’s senior St Patrick’s Day Blitz

(CNS Local Life): The Cayman Islands Kids Gaelic Football Club is hosting a free training and games session at the Camana Bay CIS football pitch on Saturday, 18 March. This event, the St Patrick’s Blitz, will encompass training of skill sets for each age group and culminate in a round robin of games. All children between the ages of 5 and 18 years old are welcome, whether beginners or more experienced.

In honour of St Patrick’s Day on 17 March, there will be some Irish-themed games and activities. Youngsters taking part will also be able to register for the rest of the year, as well as sign up for the club’s inaugural Easter camp, set for 18-21 April.

Colm Egan, full-time games development officer from the North American Gaelic Athletic Association, will teach the sport.

The activities during the Easter camp, for boys and girls ages 5-14, will be player-centred using a games-based approach with a strong emphasis on personal development and well-being.

The St Patrick’s event will start with a basic warm-up for all players, followed by a quick fun game to get everyone familiar with catching and throwing the Gaelic football. The coaching will then move on to teaching some specific techniques used in the sport, with a chance to practice these new skills in drills, followed by playing in teams.

Finally, a competitive game will close the session, with the training finishing at 11:30am.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Parents are asked that each participant wears trainers or football boots (no flip flops), and brings water, a hat and sunscreen.

To sign up for the St Patrick’s Blitz, go to the Kids Gaelic Football Club website. Deadline for registration is 6pm, Thursday, 16 March. For more information, email the club
