(CNS Local Life): The Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF) is holding its sixth annual Young Image Maker workshops from 8-12 April as part of a programme that includes a short-film competition for the chance to win a grand prize of one-week’s attendance at the New York Film Academy Filmmaking Summer Camp. The participants will be split into two groups, juniors (10-13) and seniors (14-17) with one winner eventually chosen from each.

The workshops for these groups will be held at either the Harquail Theatre or Mind’s Eye, Intuitive Art Centre Miss Lassie’s. The programme, which is geared for youth who have a passion for storytelling and films, will introduce them to basic filmmaking techniques including the fundamentals of storytelling, filmmaking and production, and pre-and post production.

Local film industry professionals including Judy Singh and April Cummings will lead the workshops, providing a glimpse into a career in filmmaking in an animated classroom setting.

The Young Image Makers programme consists of three elements rolled out over three months – the introductory workshop, the short-film competition and a red-carpet gala. Following the workshop each student will walk away with a grade, a certificate and specific feedback as to areas of strength and areas for improvement.

The 10 students with the highest grades will be offered the opportunity to enter the Young Image Makers Short Film Competition, where they are asked to write and produce a film running one to three minutes. Once the first draft of the film is submitted, the participants can attend an advanced workshop to further develop their film. Upon completion of the final workshop, the young people will be allotted time to make final edits to their films before submitting their final entry. It is mandatory for those students wishing to take part in the competition to attend the workshops.

Last year’s recipients were Ruby Grace (senior category) and Ethan Spencer (junior category). The grand prize package also includes round-trip airfare to New York City, accommodation and a per diem.

The Young Image Maker workshops will run from 9am-3pm on the weekend (8-9 April) and 4:30pm-6:30pm from 10-12 April. The deadline to register is Friday, 31 March.
