(CNS Local Life): As part of observances of World Health Day 7 April, whose theme this year is “Depression: let’s talk”, the Health Services Authority (HSA) is again offering free screenings (blood sugar and blood pressure). Starting today (3 April) through 7 April, health screenings will be offered throughout the islands, including all district health centres, the George Town General Practice clinic at Cayman Islands Hospital and Faith Hospital on Cayman Brac, from 9am-1pm, and on Saturday, 8 April, from 10am-2pm at various supermarkets in Grand Cayman. Cholesterol testing will also be offered.

Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr Samuel Williams Rodriguez said in an HSA press release the free screenings are a part of the continued initiatives of the Public Health Department (PHD) to emphasise the benefits of healthy lifestyles and early detection of diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which will enable appropriate treatment in preventing complications and ensuring quality of life.

He added that the usual screening exercise for World Health Day is further strengthened this year because depression increases the risk of non-communicable illnesses and diabetes and cardiovascular diseases increase the risk of depression.

No appointment is necessary for the screening; at registration people need to tell the clerk they want to receive the free blood pressure and blood sugar tests. The results are available right away, and counselling and referral will be offered as deemed necessary.
