(CNS Local Life): Saxophonist Marcos Bertran, from St Ignatius High School, took home top honours in the 10th Annual Butterfield Young Musician of the Year competition, which was held Saturday, 1 April 2017 at the Prospect Playhouse. Vocalist Liana DaCosta, from Cayman Prep and High School, was the runner up. Returning judges Stephanie Williams and John McLaughlin Williams, along with new international judge Dr David Ragsdale from the University of Alabama Huntsville, undertook the difficult task of evaluating the performances of the 10 young musicians.

The competition showcased a variety of very strong musical talent. Daniela Granados, the 2016 Butterfield Young Musician of the Year, also performed a solo rendition on the flute.

Each of the 10 competitors received a trophy marking their achievements on reaching the finals for the 2017 competition. The first place winner and runner up also received trophies and cash awards courtesy of Butterfield.

“We congratulate all of this year’s finalists on their hard work,” said Michael McWatt, Butterfield’s managing director. “Seeing such an amazing level of talent in our youth is truly inspiring. On behalf of Butterfield, we thank the Department of Education Services and our judges for their dedication and support to our young people. It is our hope that our support will have a positive influence on the continued development of the performing arts in our Islands.”
