(CNS Local Life): The Youth Services Unit (YSU) is offering three summer camps aimed at young people from 11-17 years old. James Myles, YSU acting head, explained the camps have a specific focus. “Our camps aim to appeal to older children as so many specifically target younger children. Given the popularity of creative, interactive cookery shows, we’ve organised two camps, which will whet the appetites for all junior bakers and chefs out there.

“Our third camp embraces Cayman’s cultural heritage and seeks to foster an appreciation of civic life while celebrating our history. We want youth to be entertained and engaged, while also allowing them to grow.”

In the “Teens Cake Boss” camp, participants aged 13-17 will compete to be named Cayman’s best young baker. The activities will include interactive baking demonstrations and daily challenges in such things as pastry making and dessert preparation. There are 10 spaces available for this camp, which is recommended for young bakers with intermediate or expert skills.

The camp runs 4-7 July, from 9am-2pm, at the John Gray High School (JGHS) cooking classrooms.

The “Learn to Cook” camp will teach 11-17 year olds the basics in the kitchen. The aim is to build up the skills of these young cooks by making inexpensive dishes with the help of easy-to-follow demonstrations and guidance from local culinary instructors.

Up to 18 children will be able to register for the camp, which also runs 4-7 July, 9am-2pm, at the JGHS cooking classrooms.

The third camp on offer is the “Teen Summit ’17 – Coat Of Arms” which will take teens from 13-17 years old on visits to iconic sites and run interactive competitions aimed at fostering civics and celebrating Cayman’s diverse culture, as it explores the island’s past, present and future.

The camp, which can accommodate up to 45 teens, will run from 10-14 July, 9am-3pm, at the University College of the Cayman Islands.

Each of the three camps costs $50.
