Sailing a catboat in Cayman

(CNS Local Life): The inaugural Cayman Islands Sailing Club (CISC) spring regatta, set for this Friday and Saturday, 12 and 13 May, will feature historic Cayman catboats, CISC racing J22s and 20 children in youth Optimists dinghy boats. In addition to the races, there are family-friendly activities planned for the non-sailors who come out to watch the action on the water.

Pamela Webster, the 2017 CISC dinghy representative said the club “is very excited to team up with the Cayman Catboat Club as our seafaring ‘old salts’ will have a thing or two to teach the young Opti Fleet sailors aged 8-14 years old”.

The weekend will start off with a Friday happy hour, from 5pm-7pm, at the Cayman Islands Yacht Club featuring Earl LaPierre playing steel pan and a catboat skippers’ briefing.

On Saturday, the catboat racing starts with the Premier’s Cup from 10am-12pm.

The youth regatta will follow, running from 12pm-4pm, with prizegiving at 5pm. Meanwhile, the J22s will sail into Governor’s Harbour at 2pm for the finish of the spinnaker race.

Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy face painting, henna tattoos, crafts, and free sailboat rides for children aged 5-17. There will also be a raffle with $10 tickets buying chances to win prizes including Sailing Club memberships, participation in a one-week kids camp, adult lessons and a night at the Kimpton Seafire Resort.
