Carl Morgan won silver in the long jump at the Island Games

(CNS Local Life): Team Cayman had inched up the medal table to 11th place in this year’s Island Games at the end of play Thursday, with a bag of 22 medals. Cayman now has four golds, thanks to track stars Kemar Hyman, who won gold in the 100 metres in 10:25 seconds, and Jamal Walton, who stormed through to take the 200m gold in just 21:55, adding to his existing gold medal in the 400 metres.

Cayman’s Jeavhon Jackson took bronze in the men’s 400 metre hurdles, and all three men will line up with Carl Morgan for the men’s 100 metre relay Friday.

On the field, Alex Pascal won gold in Javelin yesterday, after throwing 73.39 metres — some five metres further than Joe Harris from the Isle of Man, who took silver. Meanwhile, Morgan won silver in the men’s long jump behind Gotland’s Daniel Örevik, after the home favourite outdid Morgan’s 7-metre leap by 26 centimetres. Aijah Lewis took bronze in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.66 metres.

In the pool, Lauren Hew took silver in the women’s 50m freestyle with a personal best of 26.15 and a new Cayman Islands record. She also won a bronze in the 200m backstroke in 2:17.78.

Shooting was also on target for team Cayman, when William Campney took silver in the IPSC Standard Division individual event and a second silver medal in the team event with Ales Cevela. The pair also  won a silver in the Open Division. Eddie McLean and Andrew Schirn also bagged some silverware, coming in 2nd in the Skeet.

But with one more day of competition still to go, Cayman is well placed for another medal haul Friday. The men’s basketball team bounced comfortably into the finals and will play Gibraltar, while the women’s team are in the play-off for a bronze medal with Menorca.

On the track, Team Cayman will be lining up for the finals of the men’s 100 metre relay, with Carl Morgan and Lamar Reid also competing in the triple jump. Samatha Peene will compete on the beam in the women’s gymnastic finals and Igor Magalhaes will be taking part in the high bar, parallel bars and the pommel in the men’s competition.

The XVII Island Games are being held in Gotland, Sweden.

Congrats to all the athletes for their great performances. When will our Governments realize that funds directed to sports and athletics are investments in positive futures for our children. More beneficial than spending on incarceration.

Keep up the great work, athletes!

I do so prefer “the Cayman Islands Team”. The “Team X” formulation has crept into usage over the last two decade and it a ghastly Americanism. But jolly well done to everyone, whatever you call it.
