Some of the new prison officers at graduation

(CNS Local Life): Having beaten out more than 200 other people who began the process of joining Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service (HMCIPS) last September, nine new recruits were left standing at a graduation ceremony last week as the group formally became officers. The seven men and two women completed 10 weeks’ training and will begin work at the country’s three main facilities – the men’s and the juvenile sections at HMP Northward, the Immigration Detention Centre and women’s prison at Fairbanks.

The new recruits are operational support grade officers Tavarist Fowler, Avery Ebanks, Derick Johnson, Lowell Connor, Dewayne Brown, Ashley Ebanks, Gerald Otieno, Jerome Burrowes and Tracy-Ann Langford-Bodden. They all received their certificates from Deputy Governor and Head of Civil Service Franz Manderson at the White House in Bodden Town on Tuesday, 30 May.

Acting Chief Officer for the Ministry of Home Affairs Michael Nixon addressed the graduates and congratulated them on their achievements. Prison Director Neil Lavis welcomed them to the “uniformed services family” after they had demonstrated the drills they learned during training.

Training Manager Steven Hansen selected Burrowes, who gave the commencement speech, as the top recruit and best in drill. The award for most improved went to Connor and Ebanks who gave the vote of thanks.

During the ceremony Custodial Manager Maxine Passley also received her promotion pin, with Lavis and Human Resource Manager Raquel Solomon placing the signature epaulettes on her uniform to mark her advancement to the rank of manager.
