Governor Helen Kilpatrick with CCUK students and sponsors at reception

(CNS Local Life): Governor Helen Kilpatrick recently hosted more than 60 guests at Government House for the fourth annual Cayman Connection UK (CCUK) reception. The event, held Thursday, 22 July, brings together Caymanian students who are studying in the UK and those who are preparing to go to there for the first time.

CCUK also encourages private sector sponsors of scholarships for Caymanians abroad and provides a platform for students to network with potential employers, stated a CCUK press release. In welcoming the students, the governor spoke about the advantages of being involved in CCUK and studying abroad.

Kate Kandiah, co-founder of CCUK, talked about the network and recent events in the UK. Updates included information from the Cayman Islands Government Office in London, reports on student activity in the UK over the last year, social events that took place and current affairs, including the UK and Cayman Islands elections and recent attacks in England.

Kandiah also showcased how all of these things affect Caymanians abroad, and how CCUK assists through communicating with Caymanians in Europe. She discussed other areas of support offered by CCUK and thanked the governor, the Cayman islands Government and Mourant Ozannes for their support of the event this year. She closed by encouraging students and friends to sign up to CCUK using the registration form on the network’s website.

“This year we welcomed a great cross-section of students studying in all fields,” Kandiah said. “Our aim of this event is to bring together students who are currently studying or have studied in the UK with those who are about to go for the first time; this is a great opportunity for them to mix and chat, share experiences and to help each other.

“As we have now been going for four years, it’s fantastic to welcome previous student members, who have now graduated and are working, back to the network to assist new students.”
