How much does McKeeva Bush earn as speaker of the LA?

| 10/08/2017

Does the speaker earn an additional salary to his MLA stipend?

Auntie’s answer: Yes, I can confirm, thanks to a government source, that the current speaker is paid a higher salary than an ordinary MLA. To be more specific, the speaker, McKeeva Bush, is on salary grade B and, my source explained, “His exact point on the scale is reflective of years of service.”

While I was unable to nail down his exact salary, I can give you a range, based on the government’s official salary scale for civil servants, which you can access here. According to the scale, which is dated 1 July 2015 and still in effect, annual salaries listed as grade B range from $158,400 to $179,196.

Details of government salaries have also been discussed in a previous column (see Pay grade of top government officials).

    • Do Caymanians realize that with it being tax free this salary is more than both the British Speaker and Canadian Speaker of the House of Commons make. Absolute insanity for an island of 60,000 people.

Mary Lawrence earned more than that after being unemployable for forty years!
