(CNS Local Life): Both the Cayman Touch Association (CTA) men’s and mixed teams came second in the USA Touch Nationals championships, which took place in Oceanside, California 12-14 October. The men’s team, who moved up from third place last year, lost in the final 6-2 to the Los Angeles Royals, who have won the division for the last four years.

The Cayman mixed squad entered as a development team with more than half of the players having never previously played at the USA nationals. The team made it to the finals but lost 9-0 to Galaxy DC (Washington), who are the reigning champions in the mixed division.

The Cayman women’s team finished in sixth position out of nine teams in what was described as a “very tough and improving division”, stated a CTA press release. The first day of the tournament saw the women’s team come away with a win in their pool and plenty of positive achievements, both on a personal level and collectively as a team.

Overall, there were 35 teams representing all of the major cities in the US, as well as teams from Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Jamaica. The teams covered four different divisions: men’s open, women’s open, mixed open and men’s over 30. The tournament also had a youth division for the first time this year.

Scott McCarty, CTA president, said of the tournament: “For two of our three teams to make it to the finals is a fantastic result and reflects the talent and the continuing development of touch in the Cayman Islands. This was our best performance at a tournament of this level and we are very proud of all of the players. None of this would be possible without the support of our main sponsor, Mourant Ozannes, and many others.”
