(CNS Local Life): It’s getting close to the opening tipoff for the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic, an NCAA men’s basketball preseason tournament featuring eight top US Division 1 college teams. All 12 games will take place at the John Gray gym from Monday, 20 November through Wednesday, 22 November at 12:00pm, 2:30pm, 5:00pm and 7:30pm each day.

The Cincinnati Bearcats, Iowa Hawkeyes, Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns, Wyoming Cowboys, Buffalo Bulls, South Dakota State Jackrabbits, Richmond Spiders and University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers will be competing, as well as showcasing a level of basketball never before seen or played in the Cayman Islands, stated a tournament press release.

“I know that there is a huge basketball fraternity in the Cayman Islands, and I hope to see members of that community out in their numbers next week,” said Coach Victor ‘Voot’ O’Garro, president of Caymax Sports, host of the event. “Plus, the NBA season is currently in session so there is a lot of basketball fever on the island and I think fans would enjoy seeing some court action live. It promises to be an exciting lineup.”

Hundreds of fans, alumni and supporters usually travel with each team, and organisers are anticipating at least 1,000 visitors who they say will enjoy a taste of the Cayman Islands. Entertainment will include steel pan music, a swing band from John Gray High School and half-time competitions, prizes and giveaways. There will also be a tailgating party zone in the Truman Bodden Sports Complex parking lot complete with local Cayman cuisine, jerk chicken, pizza, local beer, rum and spirits, popcorn, and hamburgers and hot dogs.

In addition to the various tickets on sale, organisers have created a special package for schools, enabling students in PE classes to attend the earlier games and experience the event.
