Young Blu Watler helps clean up North Side

(CNS Local Life): The North Side community took part in a two-day district clean-up in memory of former MLA and cabinet minister Edna Moyle. On Friday evening, 10 November, North Side residents were encouraged to put out all trash, including heavier loads, in front of their homes and away from power lines, trees and fences; the following day people took part in a beach clean-up. All together 150 cubic yards of bulk waste was removed from the district.

An Island Waste Carriers (IWC) grapple truck worked its way through the roads of North Side during the two-day clean-up. Supporters of the effort, mostly dressed in IWC shirts, spread across North Side public beaches Saturday between 8:30am and 10:30am. In total, 45 bags of plastic were removed from locations which included Old Man Bay public dock and launch ramp, Rum Point and Kaibo, in an effort to minimise the amount of plastic thrown and washed up on the North Side shores. IWC will recycle the majority of items collected.

“North Side boasts many of Cayman’s natural attractions: Botanic Park, Crystal Caves, Mastic Trail, Starfish Point, local farms and some of the most beautiful beaches,” said Sean Moyle, event organizer and son of Edna Moyle, who passed away in 2013.

“’Keep North Side Clean’ was a popular saying of my mother and it is only fitting to work with a reputable waste management company like Island Waste Carriers who stand for a cleaner Cayman,” he continued, adding, “Thank you to all participants, the people of North Side and our event sponsors Out of the Blu Marketing, Star 92.7FM and Chisholm’s Supermarket. Public Works Department and Recreation along with Park and Cemeteries Unit have done a great job at keeping their locations spotless.”

Jason Brown, IWC managing director, said of the effort: “As a company and individual that values the importance of traditions passed down from generation to generation, Island Waste Carriers is extremely grateful to be a part of this phenomenal cause in memory of a phenomenal woman and organised by her loving family.”

Edna Moyle was elected MLA for North Side, and served as the House Deputy Speaker and Minister of Community Development, Sports, Women’s Affairs and Youth.

In North Side, she worked on behalf of her district’s older residents and was active in establishing the library, the health centre, the civic centre, police station and community park. She also worked to set up netball and basketball courts and to complete the Old Man Bay playing field. The North Side Primary School was named Edna M. Moyle Primary School in her honour.

In 2009, she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen Elizabeth II birthday honours for her contributions to politics in the Cayman Islands.
