Slow going for new licence plates

| 13/11/2017

I was told back in April when I renewed my vehicle licence that I would be contacted by DVDL when I could exchange it for the new licence being phased in. It has been about seven months now and still no word. How long is this process supposed to take?

Auntie’s answer: The Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing was able to shed some light on this question, though an official first explained that there could be many different reasons for the delay, depending on the particulars of the individual case.

In general, it should take between three and four weeks for the DVDL to complete the process involved in getting the new licences ready, after which a staff member will call the customer. Due to the high numbers of people who are getting their old licences exchanged for the new ones, the DVDL cannot continuously make follow-up calls if the person is not reached the first time, the official said.

In your case and for others in your position, the suggestion is for you to call (945-8344) or email the DVDL, and provide the department with your registration number. The DVDL would then let you know the status of your new plates and, if ready, where they can be collected from.

In addition, the DVDL has opened its Crewe Road office on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm, specifically to exchange licence plates.

Went in July was told I would get a call within 10 days nothing, licensed again in October told being printed and would get a call nothing. Give up now and in any case total waste of money saw nothing in the budget for the installation of the technology so they work

The DVDL did phone when new plates were ready, not only phoned but dropped them off to the service department dealership that I paid for my renewal inspection. Just exchanged old yellow plates for the new electronic plates when I picked up the car. I was done & gone clear..

During a trafic stop the other day, I was chastized as to why I still had T plates on. After explaining that I did not get a call as was put out in the media, he looked at me and said that I must forget that and go in and get them. I was so confused…who do you listen to.

I haven’t heard of anyone that received a single call let alone follow up calls about replacement plates. The DVDL also said that all T plates had replacements ready to go but 2 people in the line with me the other day were told theirs hadn’t been printed yet after waiting 3 hours on a work day.

Yup. I was there October yand while I waited (forever) 2 people before me went in to ask about their plates and were simply told “we’ll call you”.This whole thing is diabolical and has gone on long enough. Whichever peabrain allowed all this to occur in the first place should be fired. They should have just waited till everything was ready I don’t understand what all the big rush was for.

I’m not busy all the time if they pay me $10.00 a call I’d call as many as they wish during my free time.

I had to wait for about 7 months before I was contacted. I found out that it had had only been embossed a few weeks before.
