Why will airfares be increasing so much in 2018?
I have noticed while planning some trips next year that some flights have gone up a considerable amount. Is it just the carrier/fuel or has GCM increased their landing fees and passed the costs onto the carriers and in turn onto me?
Auntie’s answer: An official with the Cayman Islands Airports Authority confirmed that they have not increased their landing fees, so that is good news.
Therefore, it would seem that the answer to your question is more likely what you suggested: that fuel prices dictated the increase or the carriers simply decided they needed to raise their fares.
The economics of airfares falls well outside my comfort zone but, drawing on a time-honoured philosophy, I will submit that sometimes the simplest explanation is the best. In this case, I am leaning towards airlines choosing to charge more for whatever reason they each might have. Whether those price increases are justified is another question entirely.

High Season perhaps…all carriers raise their rates at this time..higher demand equals higher prices…simple economics!
By the way all routes have varying costs such as landing and handling fees…Landing at Ft. Lauderdale vs Miami for instance is less expensive but then you don’t have the vast connectivity of Miami airport…same with Orlando International and Sanford airport.
I understand increasing fares, but why is KX charging KYD 20.00 more going to Little Cayman than Cayman Brac?
Little Cayman, shorter distance, no Landing Fees, would like to know why?
Because they don’t want you using the Otter to get to the Brac.
They want you to use the unreliable SAABs that keep breaking down.
Because our dear Moses K who bought the Saad Saabs which are unreliable wants us to use them (they cannot go to Little Cayman) and leave the Otters for Little Cayman only. Please note that you pay the extra just to be on the Otter plane just to land in Little even if your final destination is Brac. This is forcing Brac travelers to never book on the Otter as it is more expensive just to land in Little on your way in and out of the Sister Islands.
The big increase in visitors is driving the price up. If the planes are full, then prices go up. If they are still full prices go up more (or the airlines add seats) until you reach a price that matches the number of seats and the number of people willing to pay for them. Cost has little or nothing to do with that price. The laws of supply and demand are still in effect, even in Cayman and the semi-socialist UK. The higher price is justified by the large number of people volunteering to pay it. Southwest is not adding flights to Cayman because prices are low and planes are empty, but just the opposite.
It happens!!!! Do you expect them to remain the same forever?? When the fares go down, that is called a sale. There is no always a sale going on.

Considering they are meant to be swapping out their older planes for “newer” ones that are more fuel efficient due to various improvements such as winglets which reduce drag by minimizing vortices near the wingtips, shouldn’t the prices of tickets be reduced or the same when compared to before not increasing? Of course there are tons of other factors that affect ticket price and they cannot be understated. It could always just be that the airlines are looking to profit off of routes to and from Cayman seeing as as far as I am aware Cayman Airways is operating at a loss and being subsidized by the CIG it could be that they are attempting to be more independent from government handouts.

Don’t think the person asking the question was referring just to Cayman Airways. All carriers seemed to have raised their fares.
