More confusion over new licence plates

| 21/02/2018

Ask Auntie, CNS Local Life, Cayman Islands licence platesI know that DVDL is telling people to come pick up their new licence plates. To replace them, we are supposed to bring in our old plates, logbook and windscreen coupon. I’m confused why we have to peel off the old coupon to get our new plate. Seems a waste of time to do that as well as then you have to get a new coupon to stick on.

Auntie’s answer: Right now, the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing has a lot on its plate (please excuse the pun). It can’t be easy to organise the replacement of licence plates for every car on the island. Of course, I can hear people saying that it’s part of the department’s job, so get it done.

Well, it looks like DVDL is trying, and has created a list of registration plates that are ready to be picked up, which will be updated every two weeks.

See the latest bulletin about this on the CNS notice board: Replacement Registration Plates Ready for Collection. It includes a link to the list where you can check for your number.

As for the reader’s query on the reason for bringing in your old windscreen coupons, I was able to get a DVDL official to explain why. The new coupons, like the plates, are “totally different” from the old ones, both in their look and their security features, so they also need to be replaced.

“Once a vehicle has been issued the new plates and coupon, the old coupon is of no use. However, we have had instances in the past whereby the coupon somehow ends up on another vehicle’s windshield,” the official said. Stressing that this was rare, he said that “by requiring that they be returned, we can ensure that there isn’t a coupon out there on the windshield of a car that it doesn’t belong on”.

That explanation makes perfect sense to me and I hope it satisfies you as well.

    My number is still listed…

They’re not even attempting to issue new plates for a number of vehicles and are reissuing the old style window sticker. I know of 2 people in the last month that this happened to. One of those people also re-licensed a work vehicle and had to wait hours for a new plate after being told the day before that their personal vehicle didn’t need one until next year. Very poor organisation.

They gave up a while ago. Reliscenced in December and not even a mention of new plates. Another glorious day in the Civil Service.

Anybody know the status of personalized plates?

I have zero attachment to my weathered plate number…why can’t we just get a new plate number, and then call our insurance company to change the particulars on our motor policy? What’s the big deal? All this extra failure over nothing! My plates were supposed to be ready back in October – been to DVDL three times since and still waiting…

Passing off an expired windshield coupon, that references a completely different vehicle and plate number, shouldn’t fool anyone in the profession of checking these things (on the very rare occasion they bother to).

Easy solution. just submit your address here and the police can come by and collect you for not having your car licenced properly. Then you’ll get to the front of a different que.

Know your rights…That is only against the law if a vehicle is being used on public Gazetted roadways.
