Students competing at previous track meet

(CNS Local Life): The annual Inter-Secondary Track and Field Meet is set to take place at the Truman Bodden Sports Centre (TBSC) on 1-2 March. The Ministry of Education and the Department of Education Services, in partnership with the Department of Sports, are hosting the event, which features participants from nearly every secondary school in the Cayman Islands.

For the first time ever, non-competing students will also attend and get an opportunity to cheer on their school’s athletes. The event will feature track and field as well as a cheerleading competition.

“It brings me joy to have secondary students across our Islands engaged in healthy and friendly competition,” said Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, Minister for Education, Youth and Sports. “It will be great for the athletes to also have the support of their peers as they represent their respective schools. Sports are a great unifier and I am certain it will be an opportunity to showcase the talent of Cayman’s youth.”

The athletes will be divided into five age groups (12 & under, 14 & under, 16 & under, 18 & under, and 18+). The meet will feature 100-3000m races, hurdles, relays, shot, discus, javelin, high jump and long jump.

In order to gain entry into TBSC, adults must obtain a pass from their student’s school.

The Government and private schools participating will be Cayman Islands Further Education Centre, Clifton Hunter High School, John Gray High School, Layman E. Scott High School, UCCI Dual-Enrollment, Cayman International School, Cayman Academy, Cayman Prep and High School, Grace Christian Academy, St Ignatius Catholic School, Triple C School and Wesleyan Academy.

Every event will have a male and female winner. Cayman Islands Government representatives will be presenting the champions with their awards on 2 March.
