Kickball game at last year’s Brac Spring Weekend

(CNS Local Life): Brac Spring Weekend is back and will take place 9-10 March, with organiser the Youth Services Unit (YSU) putting together events for teenagers and young adults (13-18) that will include a Brac Youth Forum, basketball and dominoes tournaments and a scavenger hunt. The weekend culminates with a beach bonfire. All events will be free of charge thanks to the public and private support of the initiative.

“It is wonderful to know that these annual events are designed to encourage young people to find common ground and foster new friendships,” said Youth Minister Juliana O’Connor-Connolly in a press release. “It is important for youth to get a chance to interact in different ways and also connect with the youth from Grand Cayman in positive ways.”

Brac Spring Weekend ’18 kicks off with the Brac Youth Forum on Friday, 9 March from 2pm-4pm at Layman E. Scott High School. The YSU and Cayman Islands Youth Assembly (CIYA) will facilitate an interactive session which will encourage attendees to discuss topics of interest within the community.

The forum will be followed by a basketball tournament for junior and senior players from 7pm-10pm Friday at the high school’s basketball courts. Teams of five players each will get the chance to show off their basketball skills. The winners will earn prizes donated by Cayman businesses plus a year’s worth of bragging rights. YSU encourages interested youth to register early for this event, in particular, as spaces are limited.

On Saturday from 1pm-2pm, teens can take part in a car scavenger hunt starting at the Aston Rutty Civic Centre. It will be followed by a dominoes tournament and a car and bike show with a sound-off, which will take place at the same location from 4pm-6pm.

Brac Spring Weekend ’18 ends with a beach bonfire from 7pm-9pm at South Side Public Beach.

“Judging by the feedback we got from last year’s events, the turnout for next month is going to be high,” said YSU’s co-ordinator James Myles. “Early registration is recommended to avoid disappointment. Registration is required for all events except for the bonfire.”

YSU will be taking a delegation of students from their YouthFlex and CIYA programmes to help run the events and to promote networking between the young people of Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac.

Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be on sale at some of the events with the proceeds going towards helping Brac youth and community youth groups. Corporate sponsorship is still being accepted to assist with event costs.

Businesses interested in becoming sponsors for Brac Spring Weekend ’18 events can call 943-1127 or email James Myles.
