(CNS Local Life): Pedro Castle is again hosting Coco Fest, set for Saturday, 17 February from 12pm-4pm, with the celebration of all things coconut featuring an array of locally made foods, candies, produce, crafts, games, beauty products and cocktails, plus live music. The third annual event will also be raising money for the Nadine Andreas Residential Foster Home, run by the National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO).

Since its small beginnings in 2016, the festival attracted more than 1,200 visitors last year as it showcased the benefits of the Cayman coconut, stated a Tourism Attractions Board press release (TAB).

“We encourage everyone to come out and indulge in all the great things the coconut can offer, and enjoy the stunning grounds of Pedro St James, our national historic site,” the TAB, which manages the attraction, said, adding it was delighted that the NCVO will be the charity partner of Coco Fest this year, with one dollar from every admission going to the foster home. Entry costs $5, with children under 12 admitted free.

New this year will be the coconut cake competition, in which participants vie to get recognised as the coconut cake king or queen of Cayman. Vendors will be showcasing some of the best traditional, locally made coconut food on the island such as coconut fish rundown, coconut chicken, fry fish, cake, ice cream, kombucha, marshmallows and yogurt.

The entertainment will include local bands, a DJ, and dancers. Children will be able to enjoy a Coconut Craft Corner hosted by the Visual Arts Society, coconut-themed games, bouncy castles, face painting and a bungee trampoline.

The award-winning documentary Bright Spot, which chronicles the history of coconut oil in Cayman and explores the decline of this industry here, will be screening from 1pm-3pm.
