(L-R) The Commonwealth, Cayman Islands and Union Jack flags fly on Commonwealth Day

(CNS Local Life): The Cayman Islands observed Commonwealth Day, Monday, 12 March, by raising the Commonwealth flag outside the Government Administration Building during a brief ceremony at 10am. The event was part of the worldwide “Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth” initiative, under this year’s theme, “Towards a Common Future”, which explores how member nations can address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizens.

The ceremony began with remarks from Cabinet Secretary Samuel Rose. Lemuel Hurlstone, the Honourary Representative of the Royal Commonwealth Society, read the message from the Commonwealth Secretary-General, while the Cayman Girl Guides read the Commonwealth Affirmation. The ceremony concluded with Acting Governor Franz Manderson raising the Commonwealth flag, stated a government press release. Premier Alden McLaughlin, cabinet ministers, MLAs and other government officials also attended the ceremony.

The raising of the flag is an act of witness around the globe where members of the Commonwealth reaffirm the commitment to democracy, development, and respect for diversity, according to a Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth press release.
