(CNS Local Life): Five member companies of the Cayman Islands Girls’ Brigade held their annual week of activities and celebrations recently, as the international organisation marks 125 years with the theme, “Fruitful and Overflowing”. From 11-17 March the local groups held their Girls’ Brigade week, which included arts and crafts, physical activities and fellowship.

Throughout the week companies gathered together, with the Savannah and Bodden Town groups hosted by North Side and George Town hosted by West Bay, stated a Girls’ Brigade press release.

The brigade also organised a half-day camp Saturday, 17 March, with all companies joined together at the Prospect Youth Centre. A total of 100 girls aged 4-18 took part, accompanied by 30 officers and assistants. The hall was decorated with fruitful vines, and empowering words such as love, peace, kindness, and self-control clad the walls and reinforced the theme.

Throughout the day special guest speakers touched on different aspects of the theme. Joan Steer, plant protection officer of the Department of Agriculture gave a presentation on “Watch me grow”, which spoke to the plant lifecycle, with each girl given sunflower seeds to plant.

Carla Yee Sing, personal trainer and bodybuilder, addressed health and wellness with the older girls, including healthy food choices and meal demonstrations, followed by a short intense workout session. Teambuilding activities and a beauty and skincare demonstration were also highlights of the day.

The day’s activities came to a close with a ceremonial balloon release on the beach where the young participants wrote messages and words of encouragement of what Girls’ Brigade meant to them, with parents and guardians also attending the final event.
