Help on tap for conserving water

Ask Auntie, CNS Local Life, Caymanian statusI’ve read that the Water Authority will supply new customers with ‘conservation kits’ that contain water-saving shower heads and faucet aerators. Does this mean these items are free? Also, what about old customers getting these as well? If the Water Authority really wants to lower water consumption, the company should offer these to everyone, perhaps at a discounted rate for all.

Auntie’s answer: I’ve got some good news for you. A Water Authority representative confirmed that old customers as well as new can get a free conservation kit. All you have to do is stop by their headquarters on Red Gate Road and ask for one. There is a limit of one per customer, which seems fair to me, but low-flow shower heads and water-saving faucet aerators should also be available for sale at home stores in Cayman.

While we are on the subject of saving water, if anyone suspects there is a leak in their toilet, the authority offers dye tabs to test if water is leaking from the cistern into the bowl. Otherwise, food dye will also do the trick. For more information, the authority has produced a brochure on detecting leaks, which you can read here.

I love the fact that California water laws don’t apply here and I can have a 2 gpm kitchen faucet without having to spend hours trying to remove the flow restrictors.

So 55,000 locals are encouraged to conserve water. What about 10,000-20,000 visitors every single day? Are they installing water efficient toilets and faucets in public places? How about hotels?

Are you kidding? We have visiting guests that take a 30 minute shower and don’t get me started on the fridge door.
