(CNS Local Life): Kevin Goring, who was recently appointed as a librarian for the Cayman Islands Public Library Service (CIPLS), will provide general library services, and assist with outreach, planning, promotion, coordination and implementation of programming offered through or by the service to support the recreational, educational and information-access needs of its patrons.

“Mr Goring brings with him a great deal of education and experience to his new post and the staff feels very fortunate that he is a member of the CIPLS.  He has worked as library assistant since 2016 and has built a good rapport with his team and the community,” Ramona Melody, Director of CIPLS, said in a press release.

Shortly after joining the civil service in 2002, Goring spent nearly a decade as a key member of the marketing unit at the Department of Commerce and Investment as well as a stint as an information officer at Government Information Services. In 2007, Goring was elected to the Cayman Islands Civil Service Association Management Council where he served two years as director and also head of the events sub-committee.

On National Heroes Day 2014, Goring received an “Emerging Cultural Heritage Pioneer Award” due to the success of his two self-published books – “The Cayman Islands Dictionary” and “Caymanian Expressions”. He was honoured once again on National Heroes Day 2018, when he received a “Long Service Award” for sports for his 12 years’ experience as a martial arts instructor, national team member and competitor.

Goring is pursuing a master of science degree in information and library studies via Robert Gordon University Aberdeen in the UK, and he recently completed a certificate in alternative basic library education through the Idaho Commission for Libraries.

In an effort to keep abreast of industry trends, Goring became a member of both the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, the leading professional body for librarians, information specialists and knowledge managers in the UK, and Cayman Islands Information Professionals.

As for his new role at the public library, Goring said, “I believe that families are the core of any community, and as librarians, it is our responsibility to provide them with the information and tools at our disposal in order to ensure their success in education, employment and life in general.”

Congratulating Goring on his appointment, Ministry of Education Chief Officer Christen Suckoo said, “It is heartening to see Caymanian civil servants continuing to pursue further education and connect with relevant organisations that will assist them not only personally in their careers, but professionally it will enhance how we serve the people of the Cayman Islands. I trust he will be successful in his new role at the Public Library Service and continue to make the lives of those we serve better.”
