The new unit’s single dental surgery

(CNS Local Life): The Health Services Authority (HSA) has acquired a state-of-the-art mobile dental unit, which will be dedicated to providing general dental services to government primary schools without in-house clinics. The approximately 200 sq. ft. mobile unit, outfitted with a single dental surgery and modern technology, will rotate through East End Primary School, North Side Primary School and Savannah Primary School for about three months at each institution.

Schools and districts dental officer Dr Andrea Maitland highlighted the benefits of the new unit. “We are excited to have this new unit with the latest technology available to provide patients with a greater scope of services on the spot. This not only improves the efficiency of our services, but it is also of greater convenience to our patients,” she said in an HSA press release.

“Patients can also expect the same quality and scope of services as those offered by an in-house clinic. This addition is just another example of our commitment to providing quality, compassionate care to our community, including its younger members.”

The new unit replaces the previous mobile clinic which, after being utilised for more than 20 years on Grand Cayman, became obsolete from a lack of space and modern technology necessary to meet the needs of patients.

The unit has a wider range of services including digital radiography and more modern equipment, as well as significantly improves patient experience and comfort through greater space and internet connectivity.

The vehicle will operate under the direction of Dr Maitland. In addition, dentist Dr Carolyn Rickleton, dental hygienist Connie Irby and two dental assistants, Linette Pattaway and Bertilo Powery, will staff the unit on a rotating basis.

The unit is already operational and being used temporarily for dental services at the Bodden Town Health Centre as the facility’s dental clinic undergoes renovation. Once the renovation is completed, the vehicle will begin its rotation through the schools.
