Participants at the CPA conference

(CNS Local Life): Cayman is playing host this week to the 43rd annual conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s Caribbean, the Americas and the Atlantic Region. The 62 participants from 18 countries attending the conference, which opened Monday, 18 June, include speakers of the house from Antigua and Barbuda, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, St Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia, and Turks and Caicos.

The Cayman delegation is headed by McKeeva Bush. Also attending are four guest speakers representing Canada, Jamaica, Isle of Man and the UK as well as an observer from Cuba, who is a member of parliament and theologian in that country, stated a press release.

The delegates will participate in plenary sessions reflecting different aspects of the theme, “Building Small Developing States” as well as attend their regional executive committee and annual general meetings.

On the first day, Bush gave opening remarks, with Premier Alden McLaughlin and Leader of the Opposition Ezzard Miller both welcoming the delegates. Acting Governor Franz Manderson then formally opened the conference.

The opening programme, emceed by Councillor Austin Harris, featured an audiovisual segment comprising a gospel song and a hymn. It also included Leanna DaCosta singing the National Anthem, Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette reading a poem and the Williams Quartet singing the National Song.

The conference is being held at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort.
