(CNS Local Life): Students from the Cayman Islands School of Hospitality Studies (SHS) earned second place in the annual Caribbean Student Colloquium as part of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Caribbean Week events earlier this month in New York. SHS students submitted a business proposal for a sustainable Caymanian-themed village called Cocoplum.

Tertiary level student teams from the Caribbean were invited to submit business proposals for a tourism-related project in their country, stated Department of Tourism press release. Four finalist schools were then invited to present their idea to a panel of judges.

Once again securing first place was a team of Caribbean students from upstate New York’s Monroe College, ahead of Cayman’s students. University of the Bahamas took third and Jamaica University of Technology placed fourth.

According to the CTO website, the colloquium is designed with three main goals:

  • To serve as a catalyst for creativity through competitiveness and scholastic research
  • To enhance in-class learning among students by heightening sensitivity to sustainable initiatives in the Caribbean
  • To provide a platform for understanding the Caribbean tourism product and contributing to its development as a world-class destination

This was the second consecutive year the Cayman Islands have competed in this event.
