(CNS Local Life): The public is being asked to submit to nominations to the Proud of Them award scheme, which recognises excellence among young people in the Cayman Islands. The nomination period runs through 20 June 2018, targeting youth from age 10-25 who are reaching new heights of achievement in academics, sports, their career, culture, business or community service.

“This is a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements and drive of our brightest and most accomplished youth,” said Minister of Youth Juliana O’Connor-Connolly in a press release. “We need the community’s input to ensure that we honour those who are worthy of praise and are role models for their peers,” she added, urging residents to submit their nominations.

Started in 2012 to highlight exceptional young people, the Proud of Them award also showcases young people’s initiative and positive attitude. To date, 96 young men and women have been recognised. The Ministry of Youth is again partnering with the National Youth Commission (NYC) to continue the programme.

“Society must commemorate the accomplishments of youth,” said NYC head Reverend Donovan Myers. “As a community, we need to be strong advocates for our young people. Many of them are distinguishing themselves in their chosen fields and our recognition of their efforts can help inspire them and their peers to greater heights.”

The 12 awardees will be announced at a reception on Wednesday, 11 July. Each recipient will receive a financial award and his or her photograph will be featured for six months on billboards across the Cayman Islands.
