Wants to recycle batteries

| 06/06/2018

Ask Auntie, CNS Local Life, Caymanian statusI recently changed the batteries in all my smoke detectors, and numerous handheld controllers. So, I have close to 20 household batteries to recycle. But I can’t find battery recycle bins in Camana Bay any more (they used to be in each building). Where else on island can I drop these recycled batteries?

Auntie’s answer: You will be glad to hear that there remain plenty of options for recycling batteries. A Department of Environmental Health (DEH) spokesperson confirmed that there are quite a few locations that provide recycling containers.

Among your options are all five Foster’s Food Fair stores, Kirk Market, Hurley’s, Cost-U-Less and Priced Right.

For a complete list of places that have DEH battery-recycling bins go to the DEH website.

May I also suggest you consider buying rechargeable batteries and using those as much as possible?

Battery recycle bin just inside main doors and to the left before reception at the Dart/Citco/Ogier building in Camana Bay. Saw it today.

I don’t dive any more but several of the dive centres used to have battery bins. I remember there was one in Cathy Church’s Photo Shop.

As for the advice in Auntie’s comment. I haven’t used throw-away batteries in things like remotes, wireless computer accessories or cameras for years but you’ve got to invest in good rechargeables – some of the ones on the market are rubbish. However, you shouldn’t use rechargeables in smoke detectors because the power can drop off so fast it doesn’t trigger the low battery warning but they’re fine in everything else. What I would suggest with detectors is you buy good batteries and don’t replace them until the low battery warning sounds – they last a heck of a lot longer than the alarm manufacturers like to suggest. I date all my detector batteries with felt-tip pen when they’re installed and one is getting on for three years old now with no problems.

I have several rechargeable batteries, which are for my weed wacker (they don’t last for too long, even though they are rechargeable) that I would like to dispose of – does anywhere recycle those?

Kirk homestore is the only place I’ve seen battery recycling… bins are by checkout

These bins marked for recycling just go to the dump. The best advice as mentioned by Auntie is to buy rechargeable batteries.

Pretty sure no matter which bin you put them in they all end up in the same place. Mt Trashmore.

Sorry to say, but that’s not where the batteries end up, the batteries are collected and bulked into larger containers and then sent off island to be recycled properly.

Foster’s, Kirk’s Hurley’s, etc.? Oh yeah? Really? Just try to find the drop-off bins. HA!

Ask someone who is sighted and not using a white cane, as they are there in plain sight at the entrance areas! I use them frequently to deposit the many batteries used in wireless mics for my church. Rechargeable batteries output less voltage than alkaline, and frequently don’t even last through the service!
