(CNS Local Life): The inaugural Women’s Empowerment 5K run, held Sunday, 10 June, raised $1,000 for the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre (CICC), a non-profit providing support and shelter to victims of domestic abuse. Patricia Muschette and Celia Hydes, members of the group Powerful Runners established the event.

The group seeks to raise awareness of running and bring women together through this medium. Muschette and Hydes felt strongly that their aspirations align closely with those of CICC, stated a press release.

“Empowerment to us is about developing strong, confident and courageous women and girls,” Muschette said. “As women, we seek to lift each other up, and support one another. Raising money for the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, while doing something we love, was partly the inspiration behind developing this 5K event.”

More than 150 people took part in the walk/run. Paul Williams was the first place male runner while Martene FitzGerald was the first female to finish. Stephen Best and Yvette Stubbs were the first walkers to cross the line.

Organisers also provided free self-defence training at the event.

CICC executive director Ania Milanowska said of the fundraiser, “We greatly appreciate the donation from the walkers and runners of the inaugural Women’s Empowerment 5K run, which will go a long way to helping CICC build an additional and much-needed shelter on island. The response from the community to our cause is really encouraging,”
