(CNS Local Life): Offshore law firm Mourant, has named David Ramsaran and Gabrielle Myers recipients of this year’s Chantal Whittaker Memorial Scholarship. The scheme is open to Caymanian students who are looking to embark on a career in the legal field. Both young people, who are interns at Mourant, are studying in the UK.

The law firm established the scholarship to honour Chantal Whittaker for her “personal commitment to mentoring, fostering community spirit and helping young people to develop and grow”, a legacy Mourant is working to continue, said a press release.

Ramsaran has recently completed his undergraduate studies at Oxford Brookes University. He graduated with a first class honours in law and will be completing his legal practice course at the University of Law in London. He is taking part in the Mourant summer internship programme for the fourth year in a row, based with the finance and corporate team.

“I am very grateful for the scholarship from Mourant,” Ramsaran said in the press release. “It allowed me to be more efficient with my studies abroad and has given me access to guidance from the firm’s lawyers regarding my future career in the Cayman Islands.”

Myers is studying at University of Bedfordshire and will be completing the LLB programme in May 2019. She has been part of the university’s law clinic for the last year assisting both the school and the Luton community with housing, consumer and employment matters. She also holds a bachelor of arts honours degree in history and German language from Queen’s University in Canada. Myers has interned with Mourant for the last three years and has worked with the litigation, governance and corporate teams.

“The Mourant scholarship has been invaluable in helping me remain dedicated to and focused on my studies, while providing me with the chance to further my practical experience through interning with Mourant,” she said. “It also provides me with the opportunity to take an articled clerk position on returning to Cayman after completing my legal studies.”

Mourant Cayman Islands managing partner, Hayden Isbister, said, “We have ambitious plans for the future of Mourant, which can only be realised with the talent and expertise of the people we recruit. David and Gabrielle are both highly committed to excellence in their academic and professional lives, and we are very pleased to be able to help them excel and reach their full potential.”
