Wants to register as an organ donor

| 31/07/2018

I see that organ donation is now possible. How do I get an organ donor’s card? Who will be issuing these?

Advance ChevroletAuntie’s answer: Yes, the Human Tissue Transplant Law, 2013 finally came into force Monday, 31 July 2018. However, the Cayman Islands is not there yet when it comes to donating organs. We have a few more steps to go through.

A Ministry of Health official explained the procedure, starting with the establishment of the Human Tissue Transplant Council, which is authorised under this new law. The council will monitor “both the donation of tissue by living persons and the removal of tissue from deceased persons”.

The ministry is in the process of having Cabinet consider appointments to the council as well as the approval of the Human Tissue Donation and Transplant Regulations, for which there was a public consultation earlier this year.

The official said the ministry hopes that Cabinet will approve the regulations in the “coming weeks” and that will allow for the law to be fully implemented.

More specifically to your question, under the regulations the council will be responsible for creating and maintaining the Cayman Islands Human Tissue Donation Register, which will include the recording of all donations by having the donor complete a registration form.

Once a donor is registered, he or she will receive a registration identification, which could be a card, as you noted. The council will decide exactly how the register will operate.

The official added that you can check for updates on donor registration on the Ministry of Health’s website and Facebook page. The ministry will also be announcing when registration is up and running.

Just a suggestion – some countries have an identifier on your driver’s license. Perhaps this can also be considered.
