(CNS Local Life): The fourth annual Shooting Stars 3-on-3 basketball tournament took place this past weekend with funds raised benefiting the National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). The 48 players on 13 teams competed in three age divisions at the games held at the Camana Bay Arts and Recreation Centre.

The Cayman Raptors made up of Mason Miller, Kai Powell, Daniel Joven and Nathan Myles won the 7-9 age group, defeating The Blue Iguanas 3-0 in the series.

In the 10-12 division, Hoopsters defeated The Bucket Boys in a close 4-3 showdown. The winning team comprised Arion Wright, Daric Ebanks, Aamair Latham and Jahron Barnes.

Wakanda defeated Trilogy 14-7 in the championship game of the 13-15 age group. Alwin Buttram, Joanki Montero, Jabari Walrond and Micah O’Garro took home the winning trophies.

John Watler, programme director of tournament organiser Star 92.7FM, said of the event: “Basketball is not a just a sport in the Cayman Islands, it’s a lifestyle. While basketball talent will surely rise, Star 92.7FM provides the only 3-on-3 tournament platform on island for these youngsters to learn the rules and particular style of play for this recently recognised Olympic sport set to debut in Tokyo in 2020.”

NCVO coordinator Mona Meade said, “This tournament is so much fun. It’s fast paced, and the kids really seem to enjoy showing off their talents. It’s always exciting for us to be a part of events with a focus on guiding and supporting the youth because it aligns nicely with what we do.

“Money brought in from this event will go towards our Caring Cousins Lunch Support Programme which supplies hot meals to children at public schools. These children often come from families who cannot afford to provide lunch for them every day. We are so thankful to Star 92.7FM for allowing us to come out and raise these much-needed funds.”
