Youngsters at this summer’s cricket camp

(CNS Local Life): Cayman Cricket last month ran a week-long camp enabling young people to participate in a number of cricket and sport-related activities. Along with hosting its own camp, the organisation has also taken the sport on the road, and integrated cricket into other multi-sport camp schedules in the Cayman Islands.

Cayman Cricket promotes, fosters and organises the playing of the sport in the Cayman Islands.

Connor Patterson, Cayman Cricket’s senior development officer, and other volunteers have been coaching at Dart’s multi-sport camp in Camana Bay, at the YMCA camps, and at King’s Sports Centre.

More than 200 children have taken part in cricket-related camps this summer, stated a press release. Patterson described the camps as “fun packed with lots of small games” including throwing, catching, batting and bowling.

Cayman Cricket president, Abali Hoilett, added, “These camps are a great way of getting young people to participate in sports. We are obviously particularly focused on increasing interest and engagement with cricket, but our own Cayman Cricket camp, and the other sporting camps, also offer a valuable opportunity for young people to socialise and stay healthy in an organised, safe environment where they can make friends and learn new skills.

“We hope these camps, and our involvement in them, will encourage more young people to take-up cricket in the coming months and years. This is a good time for cricket in Cayman, but in order for us to build on recent momentum, it is important we attract a constant flow of promising young players into the sport.”
