Members of Cayman’s national cricket team celebrate earlier this year during first round of qualifiers in Argentina for the ICC T20 World Cup set for 2020

(CNS Local Life): The first 100 Ball Cricket tournament is set to begin Sunday, 12 August, after a week’s delay due to rain preventing preparation of the wicket. Organised by Cayman Cricket, the competition will feature seven teams who will play to qualify for the final in September.

The seven cricket teams participating (one will not play each Sunday) are the Greenies, Chillies, Police, Clean Gas, Tamilnadu, Sri Lanka and Health City, stated a press release.

In the new format of 100 ball cricket, each team plays a single innings consisting of 15 traditional six ball overs, and a 10-ball over. From the loss of 20 balls per innings, which occurs in a T20 match, it ensures that this new, adapted version of cricket fits within a three-hour game, making the competition shorter and more exciting, the release said.

Cayman Cricket vice president, Hector Robinson, said of the tournament: “This is an exciting new form of cricket and we are looking forward to watching the teams play. It should be a very interesting competition. With the new format, the games will be shorter and more accessible, so we hope they will appeal not only to current cricket fans – but also to those who may not have taken an interest in the sport before.”

Start times for the three games each Sunday are 10am, 12:30pm and 3pm. Eventually all the teams will have played each other before the final where the top two teams will compete to be named overall winner.

All games will be held at the Smith Road Oval.
