RCIPS urges traffic safety around schools

CNS Local Life(CNS Local Life): Monday is the start of a new academic year at all government schools, and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service is reminding drivers about particular traffic issues that impact road safety during morning commuting, especially in the Eastern Districts. the police noted that between the hours of 7:00am and 8:30am, the Poindexter Road way will be closed to all motorists, except those who live in the Prospect area and those with children going to school in that area. This is due to a large number of complaints from the residence of the Prospect Area about poor traffic conditions and speeding in the residential areas.

Drivers are also reminded that speeding in school zones will not be tolerated, as this poses a risk to the safety of the children and other road users. Fines for speeding in a school zone is double the regular rate, at $40 for every mile/hour over the speed limit. All school zones are equipped with signage and most have a pedestrian crossing.

Parents and guardians are reminded to ensure that children are strapped into the car properly when travelling with them.

Motorists are asked to pay attention to school buses during and are reminded that going around a school bus or crossing its path while it’s picking up or dropping off students is not only illegal but dangerous.

Acting Police Sergeant with the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit Alain Belanger said, “If you live in areas such as the Eastern Districts and are going into the George Town district, you should plan to leave home earlier than you have during the summer months. The reason for this is that there will be more cars travelling in the same direction at the same time on the week days during the school days.”

A police spokesperson stated, “The aim of the RCIPS is to first and foremost work towards making the roadway safer for all road users and to ensure that the laws are adhered to. The public can expect to see an increase in police presence in the school zone areas as we will be monitoring them closely in the coming weeks.”

Just got to extend the warnings to some of the cowboys piloting the school buses.

Yes…PLEASE enforce the school zone speeds and address the vast amount of numb-skulls who feel it’s appropriate to zoom 50+ mph past a school at 3:00pm.

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen speeders blasting by schools as if the blinking school zone speed lights aren’t even there. Red Bay must be the worst for this. Perhaps Clifton Hunter, too.

If they station a traffic police unit at either school at 3:00pm, they’ll collect enough $$$ in fines to build 2 piers!
