(CNS Local Life): The foundation established by and named for Lloyd Barker, who initiated the Pursuit of Excellence awards in 2014, recently hosted its first official event, back-to-school supplies drive “Ready, Set, Learn!” at Airport Park. In a press release, Barker explained the motivation for this event was to help families, as some “find it difficult to afford all of the school supplies their children need”.

He added, “As a result, the Pursuit of Excellence team requested and attained the financial support of local companies and donations of new school supplies from members of the public to help with bridging the gap.”

Students and parents who attended The Lloyd Barker Foundation event were able to pick up supplies including bags, composition books, pencils, crayons, calculators and geometry sets. The Pursuit of Excellence members ensured each of the 217 students taking part was equipped with the needed supplies.

With a goal of assisting at least 200 students, Barker said of the event, “It was really exciting to see that so many children came out to collect their school supplies. I and the other members of Pursuit of Excellence felt refreshed, giving of our best and knowing that many students and families will feel supported, encouraged, and equipped for the new school year.”

In remarks delivered at the event, Barker encouraged parents to remain involved in their children’s education and continue encouraging them to pursue excellence. He reminded students about the importance of education and told them that when they work hard, rewards will follow.

Noting that he and his team only had two and a half weeks to plan the event. Barker said, “When there’s a will, there’s a way.” He then challenged all in attendance to dedicate themselves and adopt a similar mindset towards their goals.

Face painting and colouring stations were also available at the event.

The Lloyd Barker Foundation began as a youth platform in 2012, and was registered as a non-profit organisation in Cayman this month. The foundation focuses on youth empowerment and social drives for community development. The most well-known feature of the platform is the Pursuit of Excellence awards. To date, 10 high school students have been awarded under the scheme for their excellence in academics, character and community service.
