Franz Manderson donates to poppy appeal, with (L-R) Sidney Ebanks, Graham Walker, Paul Ebanks, Loxley Banks, Shadden McLaughlin, Andrew McLaughlin, Richard Morcombe and Mike Marshall

(CNS Local Life): The annual Poppy Appeal kicked off Wednesday, 10 October, when Acting Governor Franz Manderson, met with members of the Cayman Islands Veterans Association, and was pinned with the appeal’s first poppy by former US Marine Shadden McLaughlin. He also made the first donation into a collection box.

The association gave Manderson a “Lest We Forget” wristband, which will also now be available to the public, stated a press release. He was then shown a “There But Not There” tabletop silhouette, representing all the British and Commonwealth fallen of the First World War and the 100th anniversary of the Great War.

The ceremony to launch the appeal took place in the lobby of the Government Administration Building, where there will be a collection until the appeal closes Remembrance Day on 12 November. The high point of Remembrance observations will be the Remembrance Sunday parade and ceremony on 11 November.

All money raised in the Poppy Appeal goes towards welfare for veterans in the Cayman Islands, with collection boxes at many locations in Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands.
